Credit Card Payoff: how it works

Checked 15 Oct 2026. Uses the same approach as Moneysmart's credit card calculator, so you can cross-check a result there.

Interest is charged each month at the yearly rate ÷ 12 on the balance, then your repayment comes off. Like Moneysmart's credit card calculator, it assumes no new purchases, cash advances or fees.

Minimum repayments are usually a percentage of the closing balance or a set dollar amount, whichever is higher. By default this calculator uses 2% or $25; check your statement and change them to match. Because the minimum shrinks as the balance falls, paying only the minimum can take decades and cost several times the original balance in interest.

If your repayment doesn't cover the month's interest, the balance never goes down. The calculator warns you when that happens.
